someone mentioned this article to me like, “did you see that new york times shit about the crazy kids?” (yea, i only know really eloquent people.) and at the time i hadn’t read the article. i just got around to it. some light monday morning reading. and man, this is unsettling. but oddly, not the first time i’ve heard of or experienced “psychopathic kids.”
one summer i worked as part of this case management program. the idea was to take this surplus of money a larger program had leftover and use it to provide summer activities and services to the kids of the program. kids with issues at home or in school or families who were having a difficult time. i loooved my kids and spent a ton of time with all of them. except one. let’s call him “D.” dude was definitely a psychopath, in my non-professional opinion, and scared the bejesus out of me.
in the article they talk about certain kids’ ability to go between screaming and cold calm. he invented that. and that creepy instantly charming thing, he had that too. severely harming his brother and genuinely enjoying watching him suffer, i think that was his favorite. as much as i dreaded interaction with him, i tried everything i could for him and his family. i spent many hours trying to find ways to engage him long enough to spark interest in something other than tormenting his family but eventually the case outgrew my resources. last i heard he had been in and out of programs with no improvement, his behavior growing more severe each time, and the younger brother had begun to out act as well.
so i’m just curious, what’s to be done about this? i get that if this were back in the dizzay, we’d call the kid a witch and burn him and his mama at the steak, but what happens now? kids are smarter and more dangerous. and like Michael from the article, they learn to manipulate therapy sessions and evaluational interactions. but his mom is right, isn’t she? he’ll either grow up to be some brilliant Beautiful Mind type or a serial killer (“D” was definitely the latter). i’m not loving the odds here. any docs out there with opinions? please share.
now, if you’ll excuse me, i have to go swallow my entire pack of birth control pills.
